EARLY CHILDHOOD DENTAL VISITS

The Nigerian Association of Paediatric Dentistry (NAPD) recommends that children make their first visit to the dentist before their first birthday or six months after they get their first tooth.

BENEFITS OF EARLY CHILDHOOD DENTAL VISITS

1. EARLY DETECTION AND PREVENTION OF DENTAL PROBLEMS

Early dental visits will ensure that any signs of tooth or gum decay are detected and treated early. Interventional treatments can also be done for potential bite problems (misaligned teeth), which can reduce the extent and cost of future orthodontic treatments.

2. DEVELOP HEALTHY DENTAL HABITS

Visiting the dentist can help your child learn how to use a toothbrush, how to floss, as well as what a cavity is and how to prevent them. When formed early, good habits can last a lifetime.

3. REDUCE DENTAL PHOBIA (fear of the dentist and dental procedures)

Early dental visits help kids get used to the dentist’s office, sounds, smell, as well as what to expect at the dentist. By getting used to visiting the dentist from a young age, your child will quickly become familiar with the process and realize there is nothing to fear.

4. PARENTAL SUPPORT AND EDUCATION

Early dental visits can also provide parents with valuable learning opportunities. The dentist can explain your child's dental development and what to expect as they grow, as well as give helpful tips about healthy nutrition and what to do in emergency situations.

The dentist can also assist you in resolving childhood issues such as teething, teeth grinding and thumb sucking.

The earlier you begin regular dental visits with your children, the higher the chances of a lifetime healthy smile.
